Engineering
Good sounding tracks start with the right microphones, placements, great converters, quiet rooms, excellent headphones, and perfect timing. Setting things up well requires lots of patience and the correct mindset. For instance, many engineers will simply “quantizing” a track with irregular timing and call it done, leading to dry, electronic sounding tracks. But feel and emotional content are sometimes very subliminal elements, measured in microseconds… and easily destroyed by such unilateral treatments. We take the time to understand the ebb and flow of the track and fix timing inconsistencies elastically, beat by beat, with as few movements as possible in order to preserve the essence of the artists performance. Good engineering can also simultaneously capture the direct performance of the instrument and the artist both before and after amplification, allowing for much broader tonal possibilities, including direct reamping. We have the flexibility to record directly to converters, or through a number of hardware preamplification stages for distinct colorification.
